Social Issues in the World

The three social issue topics I have chosen are; bullying, cost of living, and crime rate and its effect on children.  I have located three links on these topics within the sks.sirs.com website.  This is a reliable website recommended by John Carroll.

The link I located on Bullying is as follows:
http://sks.sirs.com/cgi-bin/hst-clean-copy?id=SMD0067H-0-5358&type=ART&artno=0000354421.  This article indicates that two children in every classroom in America will miss a day of school each month because they do not feel safe.  It talks about the systems in place to address bullying but emphasizes the need to prevent bullying.  To prevent bullying we need to have children understand civility and respect and create an environment that prevents bullying.

The link I located for Cost of living is as follows:
http://sks.sirs.com/cgi-bin/hst-clean-copy?id=SMD0067H-0-5358&type=ART&artno=0000312668.
Within the article "Why Inflation Hurts More Then It Did 30 Years Ago" it points our that in 2011 the cost of items increased by 2.1 percent.  This is small compared to the 13 percent increase of items in 1980.   The reason inflation feels worse in 2011 is due to the fact that peoples income is not rising with the cost of living as it did in 1980.

The last link I located for Crime Rate and its Effect on Children is as follows:
http://sks.sirs.com/cgi-bin/hst-clean-copy?id=SMD0067H-0-5358&type=ART&artno=0000291401.
This article by Christina Melton Crain contains some scary facts.  Did you know that 10 percent of all minor children in the U.S. have a parent in prison?  This group children is six times more likely than their peers to be incarcerated.  This article talks about groups and programs that work towards helping kids who's parent(s) are in jail to ensure they do not follow in their parents footsteps and to see that they have the care and education they need.

These three topics are important in America today because each one is effecting us and how we live. They may not effect all of us directly, but they definitely effect all of us indirectly.  To watch the news or hear on the radio how these topics effect our environment and society is very scary.  People may disagree with these topics for sometimes it seems easier to avoid tough topics and hope they go away or someone else will take care of them.

Bullying:
I believe that bullying is wrong and you should treat people the way you want to be treated.

The cost of living:
People are paying more for things like gas, groceries, movies and material items then they did in the
past but they are not making more money in their paycheck. The cost of living is causing many people to do without things they may need.

How children are effected by the crime rate:
Kids are learning in a violent environment, and they see this as acceptable behavior.

Review of the Past Week

My first couple of weeks at John Carroll has gone pretty well, I hope that they will better as time goes on. For the first two days or so I got lost on whether to go left or right when coming from the stairs. I am learning quickly though, and it is becoming easier every day. I made the girls JV volleyball team, which was a good way to make new friends. Only three freshmen tried out for volleyball, so I had to really bound with the sophomores. From having the week of practices I recognize more people in the hall ways, than just the five people that came from my school. The girls on my team are very kind and they are very willing to help, they all have become my new good friends. It make my day easier knowing that I have friends in the grade above me and that their is a person in the halls to say hi to. My advisor's name is Mrs. Drummey, she is a very nice lady and she provides us with food during advisory. My hardest day is Wednesday, I have all my classes then, and Thursdays are my best because I have mods six, seven and eight off. Over the past couple weeks I have learned that it is important to put subjects in the subject spot when sending an email to a teacher. If you do not put a subject on the email, it will most likely go to the teachers spam mailbox. I think one of the most difficult things is knowing what bell is yours. I have a class where 3-5 bells go off but none of them are mine. The way I deal with this is the teacher normally says have a good day, or I just wait and see what the other students are doing. I have also started to pick up on pattern in the lunch room, like Wednesday I will always bring a lunch because there is so many people in the lunch room that I won’t have enough time to get in line and eat. I hope that as I continue to go to school that I will become more comfortable with the school and that I make lots of friends and memories here at John Carroll.

    My Life in Two Paragraphs

Welcome to Sara’s Dieter’s blog for English! I am a freshman at John Carroll and I went to Mountain Christian School for elementary and middle school and I live in Kingsville Maryland. Some of my hobbies are playing softball, horseback riding, and dancing. I love to spend time with my family, me and my family go down the beach a lot and we stay at my grandparent’s house and we have made a lot of fun memories there. Once a year all of my mom’s side goes down for a week and we go to the boardwalk, go go-carting, and go to the beach. I am a big fan of sports and I am a little competitive when it comes to losers and winners, I think that team sports are the best because you get to make friends and have lots of fun times with your team.
This is my first year at John Carroll and I am hoping to make lots of new friends and have the best four years of my life. I have goals for myself this year and I hope that I will be able to stick with them. My goal for English is to become a better speller and not to rely on auto correct from the computer. Spelling is very important because it is a way of communicating to others. Another goal is for my freshman experience, and that is not to be a quiet person, but to let my personality come out, and make lots of new friends. My final goal is to become a better Christian and have a stronger relationship with God and let people see him through me. This is important to me because it is important to love God and spread his word to others.
The Honor pledge is “On my honor, I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this graded academic work”.
